Adaptation (or low-level suppression) to an expanding pattern of dots has been used to examine perceptual processing within primary visual cortex (V1), but has not yet been used to study adaptation to distortions of visuospatial features. In this study we examine adaptation to ring distortions in primary visual cortex. Dots were presented on a high-contrast (100%), low spatial-frequency grating (radius 5 degrees) to which a ring distortion of radius 10 degrees, 20 degrees, or 30 degrees was added. A constant region in the center of the stimulus was the only source of visual input, allowing us to examine the basis of adaptation specifically to the visuospatial features of the pattern (that is, outside the region of adaptation to the gratings). Over the course of four 40-min sessions, V1 in five subjects showed increased responses to both the target and the background gratings for both 10 degree and 20 degree ring distortions. By contrast, in V1 of two subjects no increase in the background response was evident for a 30 degree distortion, either in the last session or across the four sessions, and a similar pattern of results was observed in another subject in the last session only. Notably, the two subjects who did not show adaptation to a 30 degree distortion showed adaptation to a 20 degree distortion in the first session only.
