The composition of the crypt flora in the palatine tonsils and tongue and pharyngeal surfaces was analyzed in children and adults. The study involved 1,080 children and adults aged from 6 months to over 50. Crypts of tonsils were cut into two separate parts: crypts with no surface lesion (in adults) and crypts with surface lesions (in children). Bacteria were found in 41.0% of crypts from children and in 34.2% of crypts from adults. Gram-positive cocci were the most prevalent micro-organisms in both groups. Uninoculated normal crypts from children had the lowest percentage of bacteria (18.3%). The percentage of bacteria rose with both crypt size and age; there was no difference between children and adults. The most prevalent bacteria among children were Staphylococcus epidermidis, Staphylococcus hominis, Corynebacterium spp., Propionibacterium spp. and C. albidum. The most prevalent bacteria among adults were Staphylococcus epidermidis, Streptococcus intermedius, Staphylococcus hominis, S. aureus, C. albidum and Propionibacterium spp. The decrease in the percentage of bacteria observed in uninoculated crypts could be explained by a decrease in the biofilm developed in the palatine tonsils of children. The presence of gram-positive cocci in these bacteria explains the localization of these bacteria in the tonsillar crypts.Q:
