Simple Vector & Matrix Manipulation Using NMath and System.Linq
This section focuses on a simple way to work with vectors and matrices using the NMath and System.Linq classes. To gain a better understanding of how to work with vectors and matrices I start out with a very simple example.
Before continuing, I want to point out that the topic of vector and matrix manipulation is pretty sophisticated and involves a lot of math. You can find an overview of this topic, along with a lot of explanations in the first chapter of “An Introduction to Programming with.NET”.
The following code takes the first ten rows and the first five columns of a matrix and adds them up.
To avoid doing any math manually, you can use NMath’s built-in matrix package. This package contains functions for adding and subtracting two matrices, adding and subtracting vectors, and a few other basic operations. The following code adds 10 to every element of a matrix M and returns the result.
To perform other matrix operations such as finding the maximum value, you can use the methods provided by NMath’s matrix package. The following code finds the maximum value from the first two rows and first two columns.
The FindMaximum and FindMaximum methods can find the maximum value in any row or column of a matrix. Unfortunately, you cannot specify which column or row you want to find the maximum value from. Nevertheless, you can get the maximum value from a particular column with the following code.
